Good morning!
Welcome to the first ever issue of Monday Morning Data Science from the Fred Hutch Data Science Laboratory. We are excited to show you what we have been working on (Fresh from the Lab), plus links that we think you would be interested in (Our Weekly Bookmarks Bar). Part of the purpose of this newsletter is to start conversations, so if you have a question or there is something you would like to share with us please let us know by responding directly to this email.
Fresh from the Lab
[Study: We Want to Hear About Your Data and Computing Needs] Starting next year, the Fred Hutch Data Science Lab will be building infrastructure, hiring new teams, and creating new trainings to better support data and computing needs at Fred Hutch. Before that happens though, we want to know about your data and computing challenges, successes, and experiences. We are conducting a large study as a part of our data collection efforts to ensure that we build things that the Fred Hutch community wants and needs. If you want your voice to be heard, click on the link above to find out more. We are hoping you sign up to participate!
[Job Opportunity: We Are Hiring!] The Data Science Lab is hiring a Staff Scientist to help in our efforts to democratize data science and create new opportunities for data science education. Click the link above to see if you would be a good fit.
[Event: Data House Calls (Wednesday in Arnold)] Data House Calls is an opportunity for you to drop by and talk to Data Science Lab staff about data challenges, coding challenges, computing questions, data management, or any of life’s other mysteries. If we cannot help you ourselves, we will make sure you get connected to the people who can help you. Click on the link above to add this event to your calendar. This week Data House Calls are on Wednesday 11/2 from 10am to 11am in Arnold Building M1-A406, or you can join us remotely by clicking on this link.
Our Weekly Bookmarks Bar
[Normconf: Amazing Free Conference] We cannot wait to virtually attend Normconf, a conference about all the important, but occasionally neglected parts of implementing data and machine learning. It is just over a month away! Some of our favorite data scientists like Vicki Boykis, Lynn Cherny, Joel Grus, Caitlin Hudon, Sean Taylor, Julia Silge, Chris Albon, Chelsea Parlett, Jacqueline Nolis, and Jenny Bryan are all giving talks. The entire conference is free, online, and all talks will be recorded and shared afterward.
[Tidyverse: Updates from Hadley Wickham] Improvements are coming to the Tidyverse, and Hadley Wickham recently shared some materials highlighting the most important changes and features.
[Conversation: When to Check Model Assumptions?] Famed biostatistician Frank Harrell is leading a conversation in real time on Stack Overflow about how to know when to check the assumptions of a statistical model.
[Book: Bash for Bioinformatics] Pacific Northwest-based data scientist Ted Laderas is preparing a new book about command line tools for bioinformatics researchers and he was generous enough to share an early draft.
As always you can contact us by replying directly to this email, you can email Jeff Leek, Amy Paguirigan, and Sean Kross at data@fredhutch.org, or you are welcome to join us on the Fred Hutch Data Slack Workspace.
