Welcome to the sixty fifth ever issue of Monday Morning Data Science from the Fred Hutch Data Science Laboratory. We are excited to show you what we have been working on (Fresh from the Lab), plus links that we think you would be interested in (Our Weekly Bookmarks Bar). Part of the purpose of this newsletter is to start conversations, so if you have a question or there is something you would like to share with us please let us know by responding directly to this email.
Fresh from the Lab
[New Coursera Course: Developing AI Policy] AI tools are already changing how we work, and they will continue to do so for years. Over the next few years, we’re likely going to see AI used in ways we’ve never imagined and are not anticipating. This course will guide you as you lead your organization to adopt AI in a way that’s not unethical, illegal, or wrong. This course empowers you to make informed decisions and confidently create an AI policy that matches your organizational goals.
[Event: Beautifying R Outputs for Mentors/Mentees] Bring your code and join us for a collaborative exploration to beautify your R outputs. Whether you're a mentee seeking guidance or a mentor eager to share your expertise, this event provides a platform to enhance your R skills! This will be a collaborative and inclusive environment where participants can learn, share, and grow together.
This event encourages mentorship and collaboration. Attendees are invited to bring their code and seek guidance from experienced individuals in packages related to data visualization and tables including gt, ggplot, quarto, plotly, highcharter, officeverse, and shiny.
Our Weekly Bookmarks Bar
[Lecture: Exciting Trends in Machine Learning by Jeff Dean] This talk highlights several exciting trends in the field of AI and machine learning. Through a combination of improved algorithms and major efficiency improvements in ML-specialized hardware, it is now possible to build much more capable, general purpose machine learning systems than ever before. One example of this is the Gemini family of multimodal models and their capabilities. These new models and approaches have dramatic implications for applying ML to many problems in the world, and this talk highlights some of these applications in science, engineering, and health.
